About
the Guild

The Godless Guild is a multi-media storytelling community centered around an original setting: Politeia Thalastrios, also known as the Republic of Enemies. It is best described as a nobledark fantasy world with aesthetics inspired by the 1500s-1600s (with minimal concern for historical accuracy). This is a world that is full of tragic and terrifying things, but it is not without glimmers of hope and beauty.

The Republic is made of several provinces governed by the Choir, which convenes in the capital city of Lyre. The Choir is able to maintain authority by monopolizing control of khaos – this world’s unpredictable and dangerous magic.

Our forms of storytelling include worldbuilding, play-by-post role playing, live “tabletop” style role playing, and creating many different mediums of art.

We are looking for members who want to explore themes such as: cycles of violence, familial bonds, the price of power, the overwhelming nature of instincts and emotions, and what (if anything) separates humans from monsters.


Our Culture

  • We are looking for creative individuals who want to form friendships and join a long-term community, but will also respect the “real life” obligations of other members.
  • We want to keep all of our drama in-world; members must be able to separate themselves from their creations. If anyone is conducting themselves inappropriately or making other members uncomfortable without resolution, we reserve the right to deny or revoke membership.
  • Boundaries are important to us. All members must respect the “real lives” of other members and any boundaries they set about communication.
  • We embrace teamwork, and discourage the attitude of needing to “win.” Members should be willing to follow the spirit of the law with regards to our guidelines, and not try to find loopholes. This also applies in-game: members must be willing to make characters who evolve and face consequences for their actions.
  • The world we have created in dark and high stakes; members must be at least 21 years old. We ask that members warn for common sensitive topics, but please know that dark themes can and will arise during your time here.

Admin Introduction

Hi, my name is Anna. I am the creator and admin of the Godless Guild. I want to take a moment here to write to you, potential or current member, about how I view my responsibilities as a leader and admin.

I have run and participated in numerous play-by-post and tabletop RPGs in the past, and that’s come with a lot of both good and bad experiences. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that being a leader is extremely hard, even if it’s just in a low-stakes hobby. I have been both proud and ashamed of past decisions in these roles. The one thing I can promise is that I am always striving to examine my actions and do better.

The Godless Guild is very important to me as a project I have worked on for several years and several iterations. Basically: I don’t want to mess this up. I want this to be a close community that can last for a long time. As an admin, I will always take responsibility for the ultimate direction and upkeep of the Guild, and I will do my best to consider the health and safety of my community without letting personal biases and feelings cloud my judgment. As someone who sometimes struggles with mental health, I will do my best to set reasonable goals and delegate tasks that I am unable to complete on my own, to be transparent in my decision making, and to hold myself accountable when those decisions are wrong.

I truly believe none of this would have been possible without the help and encouragement of many other people. Other people have always made Godless better than what I would have done on my own. I want to continue in the spirit of sharing, collaboration, and mutual growth. After all, storytelling is always best experienced with others.

Acknowledgements

Godless was created and organized by Anna as a sequel to the earlier RPG Imperium (2015-2018). This community and lore would not be possible without contributions from many other people, the foundations and details of which were fleshed out with the help of Dani, Keiran, Lily, Lyla, Nanners, Scott, and Zara.

Our Stance on AI

Many of the visual aid paintings shown in our Bible and encyclopedia were created with the help of AI image generation software. AI sometimes generates unnatural and somewhat unnerving effects such as twisted and malformed facial features and bodies. In many cases, we chose to embrace these unnatural effects due to their thematic relevance for our setting.

We acknowledge that companies have made questionable-to-unethical decisions in the creation of many AI programs. Ultimately, we view AI as a tool which can be used to democratize content creation which is here to stay. We believe that AI-generated content (outside of those using personally owned datasets) should not be used to generate profit and should be considered "Creative Commons" material unless significantly altered by humans to the point where it is now a unique piece of art that was not primarily produced by AI. AI generated images for the purpose visual aid are permitted onsite; AI writing is not. AI-generated content MUST be acknowledged onsite where it is posted. AI-generated content which is found to falsely be claimed as your own work, or which was generated to intentionally copy the work of a non-public domain artist, will be removed. With these safeguards, we feel that it can be an aid in visualizing worldbuilding and storytelling in fantasy as long as it is used as a secondary tool and not a primary source of content creation.

If you disagree all or part of this stance, that is okay. You do not have to join our community, and if you do, you can abstain from using AI-created images. We will not engage with guests or members who purposefully start arguments, bad-faith judgments, and accusations with the intent of causing controversy and dispute.
